Basic Network Problems

  • Cable Problem: Faulty, shorted, or physically damaged cables.
  • Connectivity Problem: Faulty or down network ports/interfaces.
  • Configuration Issue: Incorrect IP, routing, or looping issues.
  • Software Issue: Compatibility or version mismatch interrupts data transmission.
  • Traffic Overload: Over-utilized links cause abnormal device behavior.
  • Network IP Issue: Improper IP/subnet/routing configuration.

Troubleshooting Steps Before Creating a Ticket

  • Check physical connectivity (cable, LEDs, ports).
  • Verify correct IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server.
  • Ping your neighbor’s IP address.
  • Telnet to the gateway.

Steps for Checking Physical Connectivity

  1. Check if LEDs are glowing where the network cable is plugged into your PC.
  2. If not, replug the cable at both ends (PC and wall jack).
  3. If still not glowing, call a vendor for rectification.
  4. If LEDs glow, proceed to check IP configuration:
    • On Windows: ipconfig /all
    • On Linux: /sbin/ifconfig (as root)
  5. Ping other systems using ping x.x.x.x (replace with IP address).
  6. Ping the building switch, then telnet the gateway.
  7. If still unable to connect, register your complaint online at IT HelpDesk.
